A small but ferocious mouse warrior in the shadow of a curb, surrounded by weeds. Lots...and lots...of weeds--based on a slew of photos I took in my alley last week. (You want the neighbors to look at you funny, hang out behind a dumpster photographing weeds. Hours of fun and confusion for all.) Five days later, my tablet hand is a cramped claw, but it was worth it.

Painter, Photoshop, and I must mention that this was inspired in part by the lovely stuff of Amara Telgemeier--if you've never seen it, go check it out. I'd done complex lighting, and complicated scenes, and realism with heavy outlines, but for some reason, I never put all three together until I saw her magnificent work and went "Damn! That's a great idea!"

wow, this looks really good. I like the look a lot. So neat. Very much in line with the style I myself always aim for. I'll check out Amara to see what you're referring to.

I know you did this ages and ages ago, but I have to comment. WOW! I was flipping through your art on RedWombat, and this one actually looks like a photograph in the thumbnail. I thought maybe you were playing with Photoshop and added one of your little critters to a photo until I clicked. Love it!

Wow. You are amazing. Yeah, yeah, I can hear you saying "But... I just took the stuff... with the...and the technique..." and "Well, I'm not quite satisfied with this area here" and blahblahblah and all of the stuff that artists always say, but you'll never know exactly what this looks like to someone who knows that they could NEVER DO THIS. Best of luck to you! May the Jackson Pollocks of the art world hide their collective head in shame! ;}

No WAY! I had this picture saved on the hard drive of a computer that died years ago. Apparently the file had been salvaged beforehand, and I found it in a buried folder recently. I had been wondering as to who the artist was, and upon finding your "Aw, dang" hamster, I began browsing your gallery. And lo! Here it is! Spectacular coincidence.

Anyway, I loved it then, and still do.

My mistake; not "aw, dang" but "Well, dang." Apologies.

I love how you tamper with the original form of the animal just enough to give it some humanity.

I love the quality of light- you really captured the way light seeps in between leaves and branches. I, too, thought that you had just stuck a drawn mouse into photograph. Very nice work, as always, and keep it up- its fun to watch you. :)

Can't be more greatly done. I can just imagine the colours and want it to be like that. But some people seem to make it real... *grumble*... anyway, I got to say the mouse brings it all together, but the colours and shading gives it the big "WOW!" feeling. like ten thousand times.
ANewEnding Featured By Owner Jun 7, 2004
This is amazing - I've rarely seen such a great sense of depth! The colors are excellent as well.. Plus the mouse just looks cute :)

As this follows a couple of actual photos in your gallery, I thought from looking at the thumbnail that it was another photograph.

Instead it was -- this. Wow. I really love this style. I don't know if I've seen anything by Amara Telgemeier (although I'm gonna head to Google in a minute or three) but I've read/seen something else in this style -- realism with outlines -- and I thought that was pretty good! I shall definitely be investigating further...

Ok, I found some work by Amara Telgemeier, and with all respect to her, the MouseWarrior is far superior.

I love little animals like this!
You're great!
I'd like to have this one in my garden!! hehe :D
ejason Featured By Owner Aug 6, 2003
Yet another comment. As for the negative part, I would have used a lighter stroke on some of the leaves to make it blend more. But the lighting is amazing, and the ear marking on your little rodent is a nice touch.

First when I saw this I dint realise the whole thing was painted... i actually thot it was a photo manipulation! Not only that but youve got beautiful control of colors and texture. Extremely impressive i have absolutely no idea how you made this. Fantastic.
