We all know how the story goes. The spunky fantasy heroine is inevitably joined by her Charismatic Mammal Companion* who loves her and protects her and about fifty percent of the time is also telepathic.
This is fine if you are a North American heroine, where you have cougars and wolves and bears and an array of hoofstock, or jaguars if you go a little farther south. Works out okay if you're Northern European, too--fewer big cats, but there's always wolves, or the old standby, telepathic horses. Get over into Asia and you've got tigers and snow leopards and more wolves and dholes and panthers and what all, and of course, our African heroines have their pick of the savannah.
But the poor fantasy heroine stuck on a Polynesian island? You are sunk. There's only one big animal in the neighborhood, and it will follow you around grunting worshipfully and rolling in mud when you aren't looking, and occasionally getting overexcited and goring your relatives. This, I suspect, is the real reason that we see so few Polynesian fantasy heroines.

I just liked the sketch of the one chick so much that I wanted to paint her. And somehow the pig showed up.

*Dragons are mammals for the purpose of this discussion. They're just like platypi, with the eggs and whatnot. And they sweat milk like a platypus. What? Just because YOU never milked a dragon...
In the interests of pure pedantry, I feel I must point out there are in fact some much more charismatic mammals within close approach of any Polynesian heroine... did you see the movie "Whale Rider"?
You are being a bit mean to the poor boar - I got one word for you - truffles! Can your birds, canines or felines find those for you? And as for the rolling in mud - you know canines like to roll in POO? To mask their scent so they don't smell like canines? "hogs" have a superior sense of smell to almost any other animal - they've even been trained for drug-detection purposes but their "reputation" generally causes them to be superseded by the "cuter" dogs. They also have a reputation for being fierce and hard to kill. I've created female faun Druids for RP who picked the boar for their animal companion.
Can't help pointing out... Polynesians traditionally learn to swim as they learn to walk, for obvious reasons, and there's a much more charismatic mammal juuuust offshore. You know the one I mean. Second only to the unicorn in sheer twee pink-candyfloss-and-rainbows-associatedness. And I don't think Polynesian mythology goes in for animal companions much anyway.
My major is anthropology, so my mind wanders quite a lot in places like Polynesia and Melanesia... and I was thrilled to see this. This scene is just wonderful. Makes me feel inspired to try out something like this myself. Hey, do make a melanesian heroine as well!
It's a lovely piece of art though.
