Concrete Frog by ursulav Concrete Frog by ursulav
Everybody probably knows by now that I like concrete. Cracked and crumbled concrete textures make me all giddy and giggly and inclined to twitch. I wish there was a way to visit downtown Detroit without fear for my life, but hey, them's the breaks.

Previously, my love affair with concrete has always been a digital one. But t'other day, somewhat at random, I decided to try getting some background textures by breaking the rules of how one is supposed to apply gesso (sand between coats, my ass!) and got something that looked a good bit like concrete. This excited me to no end. So I did what I always do when faced with a cool texture--I put a chameleon frog on it. 'Cos you can hardly ever go wrong with a frog.

I have a feeling more concrete frogs may be forthcoming, or similiar beasts, since there are currently three canvas/boards in various stages of being concreted lying strewn about my studio floor.

how, how do you make such beautiful textures!

I'm guessing but it looks like you've built up layer washes and pulled back and scrapped some of the darker colours back?

I'm going to have to try that, in fact I have teeny tiny pieces of canvas board that someone gave me for no apparent reason who will love being concreated. thanks again.

Ah...I think it was puddled layers of very wet acrylic, yeah. Don't think I did much scraping, but a lot of random blotting with crumpled paper towels.

This is way too cool. The colors on the concrete are awesome. As usual, your frog is perfect, and I would kill to paint frogs like that. Great painting, and :+fav:!

Now that it's settled (*ahem*) that this is a spirit-frog, I can comment on a couple of the details which caught my eye without letting myself be distracted by its froggy goodness (and it is a nice effect, I've gotta say -- and who doesn't love frogs?)

Great concrete texture! But what really caught my eye was two bits of graffiti:

"Ursula was here" :D

"Fro..." Despite it being cut off, I'm firmly convinced that says "Frogs Rule!"

:-)

This is marvelous! I love how the concrete behind the frog, seems to shape up the skin of the frog... it all seems solid and transparent all at the same time. The sheen on the frog's skin is in all the right places, the colors fall on him just right. Great great stuff. In fact, if you were to cut the frog right out, you'd have a hard time figuring out what the heck is going on... it's deceiving to the eyes on its own, and your image as a whole just gives that deception a while new twist... Are we imagining the frog? A hallucination we got while tripping on something and it happened to match the background it was on? or is the background itself coming to life, soon to be riddled with a vivid plague of frogs? Oooh... Great stuff again... definitely a Fave.

I've always admired the way you do concrete. :) And the fact that you've managed to create that look with traditional media is even cooler. :D

(Heh. The little scribblings amuse me so much. 'Ursula was here', indeed...)

is that supposed to a real frog on a wall, or a frog painted on a wall?

anyway, both ways, it looks amazing.

beautiful job on this.

i doubt that some people aren't drooling over your talent and the way you've poured 'you' into this piece.

how much time did you spend on this, btw?

the shading and the colouring is just gorgeous.

my message centre doesn't do this justice.

Actually, it didn't take that long at all--the wall texture was basically five minutes of painting, then two hours of drying, then thirty seconds of blotting, then another hour of drying, then five minutes more of painting, etc for a day and some change, and then the frog only took about an hour, hour and a half. So it was only about three hours worth of actually WORKING on the piece, it was just spread across about two days of drying time.
