This is the first sculpture I've ever done, and I still don't know why I did it--I just suddenly had this itch to do something 3-D. Who knows? So I started mucking about with polymer clay and wound up with this kinda Christensen-meets-Froud face, and then I took it to my husband, who suggested a wire mesh armature, and after about a week of learning as I went, (and with a lot of help from James, who helped figure out things with weighted bases and steel rods, and generally did enough to call this a collaborative piece!) this was the result. He's very mixed media--polymer clay, wire armature, a lotta cloth (finally, a use for the cloth I've been collecting for a year or so!), a lotta glue, etc.
I dunno, it was fun as hell, and I'd like to do some more. I do so much painting for a living that I think I needed to do something completely different, just for my own amusement, with different challenges--painting is full of difficult bits, of course, but they're the same old difficult bits over and over--and this is the form it took. (In fact, the top of his staff is an arcade token I picked up at a garage sale, which reads "For Amusement Only." I thought it was appropriate.) I suppose as sculpture goes, it's not high art, but I enjoyed it, damnit.
Would you care to take a look at the stuff I make out of polymer clay and wire?
I believe you could make some of your magnificent characters in a similar way that I make my stuff.
It would be something really great to see.
I would buy that if I saw it anywhere
To be that good at your first go is fantastic!
Nice work.
