The woodland creatures mostly liked her. She may have looked humanoid, but the eyes of animals are not easily fooled, and they knew she was really a plant--a peculiar ambulatory plant, to be sure, but still, not a threat. To them, she was a plant that could scratch you behind the ears or remove burrs from coats. Hedgehogs in particular found her fascinating--something about the long, pointy roots really appealed to them, and she could occasionally be found accepting gifts of flowers and particularly juicy slugs from small, spiky admirers.
On the other hand, she did have a persistent problem with woodpeckers.

Mixed media on illustration board, 8 x 15. Something about this particular character really enthralls me. I'm working on a short story about the House of Red Fireflies, as there's been so much enthusiastic feedback about it, and the mandrake girl is definitely the central figure. We'll see how (or if!) it goes.
Anyway, this was just a silly little pin-up piece. I figure any bark-skinned creature is going to have some run-ins with the breed! That's a hairy woodpecker (or maybe a downy woodpecker, the major difference is in scale, and I'm not willing to start doing equations of her height vs. the woodpecker to figure out which.)
