Quick the Donkey

The donkey's name was Quick.

His front hooves were neat and dexterous and opposable, and his back hooves were the size of dinner plates and had unassuming steel shoes. He had a pale grey hide and pale pink nostrils, and ears like enormous fringed fans, and if you lifted up his cowl far enough, you would find large, slightly worried brown eyes, with the devastatingly long eyelashes reserved for beauty queens and large ungulates. He was a small, neat-footed donkey who kept his elbows tucked in and could vanish into a crowd much more easily than a bipedal donkey wearing a yellow robe with checkerboard edging had any right to do.

Oliver was a very minor mage. His familiar reminded him of this several times a day.

He only knew three spells, and one of them was to control his allergy to armadillo dander. His attempts to summon minor imps resulted in nosebleeds, and there is nothing more embarassing than having your imp leave the circle to get you a tissue, pat you comfortingly, and then disappear in a puff of brimstone. The armadillo had about wet himself laughing.

He was a very minor mage.

Unfortunately, he was all they'd got.

Every now and then I do a painting, and I feel myself sliding into the abyss. This was one of those. Not because it's neccesarily any cuter than anything else I paint, or any more devoid of redeeming social value (well, the armadillo may help. There's a lot of redemption in an armadillo) but it's a big-eyed kid, and it was...so...natural. It flowed. It was disturbingly easy. Somehow, against all reason, a chunk of my brain is absolutely at home painting cute kids. I don't even LIKE kids*. I have all the maternal instincts of a cactus. And yet...there was Oliver.

*I am terrified of them. Much like grey aliens, which I also fear, I do not know what they want, I am largely unable to communicate with them, and they seem to drip unearthly fluids on every available surface.
