Pollinator Shrine by ursulav Pollinator Shrine by ursulav
So I took this workshop with Michael DeMeng, who is one of the best assemblage artists working today, in my humble opinion, and came home with a Dremel in my hand and a mad light in my eyes. (Also a hangover. The workshop was in New Orleans. I think I'm in crawfish withdrawal.)

This is the first thing I'm managed to construct--"Bombus" is the Latin for the humble bumblebee genus, a group suffering serious declines, like many pollinators, so I felt the need to build a little shrine to this underappreciated bunch.

Original is 7 x 7.5, made of picture frame, wire, drawer handles, nails, screws, random bits, something that I think was a toy wagon wheel once upon a time...well, that's assemblage for you.

Original is on e-bay! [link]

My grandfather was a bee keeper; I have to say this is a nifty looking piece. Whoever won the auction was a lucky SOB. I really love everything about this piece, especially the overall shape and that drawer handle turned into an awning. And lets not forget that adorable bee in the center. So few people really know what they look like when they draw them. this piece makes me happy just looking at it.

Assemblage seems like a whole lot of fun, I got a bit of a fondness for trash, abandoned things, and old random knick-knack, and it sounds like a good excuse to collect them. I used to collect scraps for collage art, which is similar.

VERY NICE! I bet Michael loved it! He must've told you about the killer bee sting on his neck....and then getting a tattoo of a bee in the exact spot. I've gone to 3 or 4 of his workshops in WI. Fun guy, isn't he?
I'm trying to figure out what the original triangular shape was before you altered it? Was the picture frame that shape to begin with? COOL PIECE!
Coolie

I live in hope that one day I will have a job that pays me enough money to outbid EVERYONE on one of your e-bay sales. Till then I just sigh and dream of owning something as AWESOME as this is.

The only thing that could make this more glorious is if it were weatherproof, and I could hang it out on the fence where my pollinators are.

It's such a cool idea. The wagon wheel especially, since pollinators do a lot to keep plant life/life in general rolling on. :) Thanks for sharing!

I'd love to have one of these to give to my bees XD, the poor things nearly failed the winter, literally hundreds of dead bees outside the hives.

Oh no! I'm so sorry to hear about your bees--thank you so much for being a beekeeper! I know it's a thankless task when the bees aren't doing well...

Thank you!

You'd be surprised how rewarding it is though, my bees are out and about a bit now and it means 8 months of hard work over 2k10 have paid off. I need to learn some genetics though so I can help and 'build better bees.'

To continue the Latin, bees were considered to have (originally) come from cows; one of their epithets means 'cow-born.'

Anyways, this is an adorable little shrine!
Poor little bumblebees...
