Whew.
So having re-discovered that Sea Hag painting, which I'd done a few months back, but hadn't been able to post until the book was published, I was struck by the fact that damnit, I really like that character. She had--y'know--panache! And I was brooding over this and muttered something like "Wish I could do that sort of thing in real media..." And stopped. And my brain cleared its throat awkwardly. And I sighed, and went to try and do something similiar in real media, because I have this thing about admitting defeat* and thus after four or five days, here we are! It's not the same as I'd do in digital media. It's rather better than I would have thought I could do, mind you, since I do few humans in real media, and I learned a lot about mixing colors in acrylic ink that I had not previously known. Digital would probably have been slicker and smoother and probably a bit more vivid--and a helluva lot faster!--but of course I've been doing the digital stuff for years and years, and real media is a relatively recent obsession of mine, because I hate being bad at something. So all that considered, I was pretty pleased, although as usual, the scan just doesn't live up to the original, which is something that I still miss about digital art. But I still like this character, damnit. Right! Acrylic, watercolor, gouache, and general mixed-media-ness on illo board, 8 x 16. Original is for sale, prints available. Visit [link] or drop a note if I'm slow on the updates. *My husband would probably attest to this tendency, possibly at great length and with flailing hand gestures. Lies, all of it. I admit nothing. |
