The Sheep by ursulav The Sheep by ursulav
I don't know. I was going for something, but I don't think I quite got there. Maybe the sheep needs more dark washes over it to push it back even farther into the shadows, but once you start doing that, you can make yourself crazy, going "Just one more wash!" until you've got a solid black painting.

I don't know.

One to shove in the studio for a year or two until I figure out what I'm missing, maybe.

18 x 24, mixed media, mostly acrylic. Original is for sale, I guess, and prints are available.

I love it! (I was just looking for a cool picture of a sheep and there you go - it's perfect!)

Gorgeous. The sheep is soft, cute, and appropriately frightened by the dreamlike environment. I like the use of texture and lighting. Stone and tarnished metal is rendered marvelously here. It's dark and foreboding without being over the top or crass like so many attempts at nightmarish imagery.

The poor sheep looks like he's cowering in the corner and remembering a bad shearing incident.

this is an amazing piece! love the detail and the definitely surreal elements. i love coming across real visual ART on here.

i think the sheep takes up to much of the picture. For him to be afraid everything need to overwhelm his figure and size. small and backed into a corner with larger scissors?
sapphiredragonfly Featured By Owner Apr 28, 2010
For some reason, I find this one profoundly disturbing. I can't tell if the sheep is huddled in a corner giggling in the broken laughter of the truly insane, or is huddled in a corner in bone-shaking horror. Either way, given the scissors, I figure it's hiding from the sheep-shearer.

Though, in my experience, sheep are far too baffled by life in general to be much bothered by shearing. You sling them about a bit and do the shearing. Then they get up, shake it off, and bound away and five minutes later they've forgotten the whole ordeal and are wondering why they feel a draft. Perhaps it's different in Gearworld.

Looks like Little Bo Peep
has left sheepy there a present...

That poor sheep! Wonderful work on the Gearworld. I like the claustrophobic and industrial environments that are in it. :+fav:

I love sheeps. GREAT WORK! what else can I say?

Goodness! Shears! The greatest fear -- except of course the famous wolf -- of all sheep in the world! Wonderful, if I had half your talent, I would be richer than Bill Gates.

I like it alott...

Shouldn't they be shears, not scissors? You know, rthe old-fashioned hand-shears, with the circular bit that's tythe spring and two triangular blands and you squeeze to cut?
GlennDiddit Featured By Owner Aug 24, 2008
I like this.

This has inspired a picture I will draw.

Awesome job! I'm using this image as my wallpaper and it brings a smile to my face every time I catch a glimpse during a break from the multitasking chaos.

I feel really presumptuous making a suggestion. I just recently found you and every piece that I have been drawn to click on I have loved. I agree with you that this one didn't quite get there. My first thought before reading all the comments was that I didn't like the fleece. I want the fleece to be more luscious, to accentuate what is about to be taken from the poor sheep.

I will now order prints in order to make up for my audacity!

Hauntingly beautiful. I love the textures you've done in this one. Great atmosphere created through color; low key and earth tones really pull it all together

those scissors look awesome. and the poor sheep. :C

I love all the texture you put into your pieces with little bits of hatching here and there. very nice.

i think the ugly reality (or maybe not so ugly) is that this piece shouldn't be in color. in color, it just loses some of the expressiveness (that sense of surprise/shock/anguish) that you find in the black and white sketch. it's a pen and ink piece, through and through.

that's my "expert" opinion, anyway =P
OrianaCarthen Featured By Owner Feb 24, 2007
You know when I saw this in your gallery, I thought the sheep was playing a harmonica.

i like it, but what does the gear and the shears symbloize? and the sheep's mischevious expression? i love it ^_^

awww the poor sheep =P i wanna hug him

this is great, i love come up with the most amazing ideas!
kauvara Featured By Owner Feb 12, 2007 mention that you liked the sketch better. In the sketch you have a greater variety of line quality, like you drew out the curls in white against the background which gave the sheep a slightly more whimsical and textured look, and its something lacking in the painting.
its still a really effective piece tho...poor sheep afraid to be sheared...*pats its head*

Inuibuki Featured By Owner Feb 5, 2007
Awww poor baby, he doesn't wanna be sheered. D=

i love the texture of the sheep! Very nice! I also like the dark feeling of this painting. The sheep really looks scared. : <

I love the its saying, I've got a surprise in store for you this time...hehehe. I like it a lot and if you keep adding washes, sometimes you lose the texturing and colors...another :+fav:

It'd almost come off as comical, but the sombre tones make it more intruiging.

Once again, your creativity trumps any objectivity about the piece.

stronger shadows would probably help... but right now she looks like she's giggling to me... not frightened. Lol.
