Vivid Mouse by ursulav Vivid Mouse by ursulav
Vivid mouseness! Or possibly ratness, as the line is a little blurry when you have nothing to consider in terms of scale. Background was a kind of gloopy metallic gold paint, which gave it a little texture without digging out the gold leaf again.

6 x 6, ready to hang. Original sold, prints are available--send a note about pricing, or visit Red Wombat Studio for prints: [link]

I love the shapes of the mouse, although he doesn't seem to stand out against the gold paint very well... but maybe that's because the metallic didn't scan

Being a rat fan, this is one of my favorites of the series! The colors look especially cute on it. I think with the way you did the tail, it looks more like a rat, but perhaps i'm just biased!

There's actually no difference between "mice" and "rats", in that you can't classify rodents as one or the other. It's just kinda "whatever they got named at the time". (I mean, the kangaroo rat is more like a gerbil..)

That's like saying there is no difference between Chihuahuas and Golden Retrievers because they're both dogs. Certainly they have some similarities, but regardless of both those and how similar their taxonomy may be they are definitely still different. I have had both rats and mice as pets and I assure you that, whatever the science may say, owning pet rats and owning pet mice were two very different experiences.

As a follow up: as opposed to Chihuahua and Golden Retriever, which are both members of the same scientific species (Canis lupis familiaris) - yes there are huge differences, but they're still the same species. "Rat" and "Mouse" gets applied to many, many totally different species without any real kind of clear definition.

I meant the terms "rat" and "mouse", and the way they are applied indiscriminately to multiple species of rodentia without clear definitions as to what constitutes a "mouse" or a "rat". I wasn't specifically referring to black rats and house mice, which are what people commonly refer to as rats and mice respectively. From the following link: [link]

Rat and mouse are actually not scientific classifications. These words are common names for rodents that look alike to the casual eye.

Rat is used to describe medium-sized rodents with long thin tails. There are many species of rodent that are called rats -- kangaroo rats, cotton rats, Norway rats, black rats, African pouched rats, naked mole rats, wood rats, pack rats, Polynesian rats, and many others. These different rodent species may not be closely related to each other at all!

Mouse is used to describe tiny, sparrow-sized rodents with long thin tails. As with rats, there are many species of rodents called mice which may or may not be closely related to each other: house mice, field mice, deer mice, smoky mice, spiny mice, and dormice are all called mice.

So, which rats and mice are you talking about? Generally, people are referring to the domestic or pest rats and mice, which means Norway rats (Rattus norvegicus), black rats (Rattus rattus), and house mice (Mus musculus).
