Well, as some of you may recall, way back last year I was fooling around with making a game on the StoryNexus engine, put out by Failbetter Games. (They do Fallen London.)

They announced a few months ago that they're not going to be developing for it any longer, because they're very busy and there's no money in it. And I am entirely sympathetic to this, and understand their reasoning. But--the downside--I probably won't be pursuing this game any longer because once the maker stops supporting it, stuff gets tricky.

But y'know, I put a crapload of work into the world and I love it very much and I would like people to be able to see it.

Act One is playable. It is occasionally buggy--they broke some of the art options--and there are quests that don't wrap up and the Act ends on, not so much a cliff-hanger but with a whole lot of stuff unresolved. And parts of it are dull and grindy and parts of it are probably not at all intuitive and I did not do the best job of design. The art is 99% stock because, as I said, they kinda borked some of the art options, and though I did a few new pieces, I couldn't begin to illustrate all 400+ cards, and even if I had, they wouldn't work right now.

So I am not recommending this as a great gameplay experience, because it's not all that great.

But it is a first effort, and y'know, despite all those caveats, I'm kinda proud of what I managed to accomplish in terms of worldbuilding. I love these guys very much, I love Quippet and Crazy Wool and the Tangerine Rabbit and the Silver Rat and all the rest.

I'd like to someday follow their story. It might be as a book or it might be as a comic or I might just set up a "Random World Website With Stories And Art And Poetry Written By Stuffed Sheep," or I might even find another way to do a game like this.

But if you want to play it, here it is. (Please note: If you find bugs, I can't do much about them anymore, and sometimes art shows up labelled as "Placeholder Image" which, again, that's a new one and kinda them. So tech support is not gonna be great for this However, if you get actually STUCK--as in it's broken, not as in "I don't know what to do next!" then use the support e-mail and I will try to get you unstuck!)

(If you hate games that require some grinding, you will not enjoy this. It's okay, they're not for everybody, no reflection on you! It's cool!)

It can be reached here: Cryptic Stitching

It requires a Failbetter Games account. If you would like to give them money for more turns, that's between them and you--I do get a small cut, but not much, and honestly, I'd prefer you just played it and had fun. At standard browser rates, it'll take a few days or weeks--the actions refresh at the rate of about one every twenty minutes, so it's one of those games that you do a little bit in your browser when you're taking a break from whatever it is you do normally, not one you power straight through.

And you can hopefully spend a little time in the world and maybe see a little of what I was trying to do, even if events have conspired against it.

I'm really disappointed that things worked out where you couldn't finish the game. I was jumping into a bunch of different Storynexus games recently, trying to find some good ones, and yours was one of the ones that stood out. Enjoyed going through the world, building up my character, etc. Shame it probably won't go anywhere, but what was there, was good.

I would love love love to see an RPG for this! Or a graphic novel, or a boardgame, ot even a card game. I only found out they'd stopped developing the engine for this because I was looking around for more :(

... anyway, I love the Palaeolithic and making fuzzy things, so this is perfect for me :) You did a wonderful job (and hopefully will again!) :D

I'm actually playing your story right now. It's really good.
It'd really be a shame if it withered on the vine do to unforeseen events.
Not to push, or anything. Just wanted to let you know that you have a fan. :)

Tried a few steps... love the idea of "interactive" stories but I'm not really thrilled with the "take a card" concept. I think that's too much trying to get a tabletop feel into the game. I am a programmer who loves these old kinds of adventure games. Maybe there's a way to combine our talents to finish this? How much do you rely on that card-based approach? PM me if you want to talk :P

Played it, REALLY liked it. Now I'm just wandering around seeing what happens when I do really stupid things, because I was playing it intelligently up till now, so might as well see what else there is!

I'm enjoying this game greatly.  I'm almost tempted to buy the game currency to get more turns.  It's just not in the cards right now. (I am deeply sorry for the terrible pun, but I couldn't help myself.)

Maybe you could team up with more people to develop a game using a different, better supported engine? You'd do the writing and the concept art, you'd need a programmer and possibly an extra artist to produce the final art.

I wanted to make an account for this. But the register function seems to be malfunctioning :( I get a whole page of text without any lay-out. I'd love to give your game a go, but I'm balked by this first step...

Anyway, the Kickstarter is a good idea. You might be able to get funds and people in on it. The game sounds like a lot of fun.

Hmmm--that one's above my pay-grade. I guess try back later, or with a different browser? (It doesn't always love Chrome...)

What do you think of a Cryptic Stitching Tabletop RPG?

...by which I mean, I've already started compiling the info from Cryptic Stitching because my mind needs another project to procrastinate on other projects with.

Oh crud. Failbetter wanted me to do some work for them a while back, and my other obligations ruined it at the time ... I was looking forward to (someday) diving back in and making it up to them :(

I haven't tried the broken online copy, but it sounds interesting.  Have you considered offering this in a Kickstarter campaign, and pulling together your own team to complete and release it? I might be able to get you in touch with a few freelancers, and I'm sure there are others here on the dA.

Also; any chance you could post some snapshots?

*laugh* Snapshots don't really apply--it's mostly a text game, looks like Fallen London!

I couldn't in good conscience Kickstarter something like this--it's somebody else's engine, and I'd get really twitchy about taking money from people to work on a project that hung on the will (and hosting, and intellectual property!) of a third party. And as much as I might like to do a game someday, I know nothing of budgets for such things and would be very leery of taking money for something that could get overbudget so very quickly.

I like to only take money for stuff that's already done, or that I KNOW I can do. Too much potential for havoc otherwise...

Have you ever considered making your own app, based on your own stories and characters?  It need not be fancy.  I mean, look, if a thing like "Flappy Bird" can make a million bucks, you should be able to do twice as good with half the effort, considering your talent, creativity, and imagination.  Give it a thought?  Downloadable apps are where the money's at, these days... and I have an ulterior motive; I want to play your game!

Even if it was a text-only adventure, I would want to install it.  I'm sure it would provide hours of creative narrative.
