March Hare and Dormouse by ursulav March Hare and Dormouse by ursulav
The last of my little sepiatone doodles done during my recent trip to LA. I watched Alice in Wonderland for the first time in ages, and really, you can never have enough Alice in Wonderland, right? Right.

(I thought about going creepy with it, but going creepy with Alice in Wonderland is like shooting comatose fish in a barrel. Mind you, that may not stop me in the future...)

About 8 x 10 on 9 x 12 watercolor paper, mixed media. Original is for sale, and will be going to the Anthrocon art show, unless somebody makes me an offer I can't refuse first. Prints are available for $10 plus shipping--send a note or visit [link] to order.

You know, with all the creepy versions of "Alice", it's actually refreshing to see a cute take on the characters. As always, your characters are animated and very sweet. Great work!

Thank you for crediting the March Hare and Dormouse!

I love both of them (plus the Cheshire Cat), especially the Dormouse. He was so cute in the Disney version.

your style is amazing. it's almost exactly how I picture animals. I really like this one for some reason. probably because I love the animal characters in Alice in Wonderland and Redwall so much. Anyway, you're a profound talent. And I appreciate your work a great deal.

Lewis Carroll never ceases to impress me, nor does the people inspired by his work.

And I gotta see this Czechoslovakian Alice...

sweet! did you ever see jan Svankmajer's alice? .. if you want inspiration for a creepier twist on the tale then I reccomend it... it's Czechoslovakian, and made using a mix of live-action and stop motion with real objects (ie, when alice shrinks, she becomes a porclain doll) and the white rabbit is actually animated using a dead taxidermy specamine, which bleeds sawdust from a hole in his chest throughout the film! it's awesome ^-^

It's so good to see a whimsical Alice rather than the "dangerous" version. Everyone seems to go through a "spooky alice" at some point, It's like the artistic equivalent of moody adolesence.

Wonderland is love.

But it is so easy to go creepy with it, there's an intesting children's book, "the king in the window" i think, that mentions the creepies in wonderland

Hare is rather lizard-like in your depiction...it looks as if he's going to slurp up the Door Mouse with a quick flicked long forked tongue...somewhat of an uncomfortable drawing to look at. Oh by all means not in a technical sense....but as far as imaginative interpretation....this little fella rattles my bones...he's cunning and deceptive....and can we say, quite mad! As he should be portrayed...

Lewis Carroll's work was in no way sweet or cute...it may have adored a candy-coated shell but behind the whimsical facade was a rather disturbed man...an opium addict with hoards of child pornography hidden away in his cellar (go ask Alice!)...ah to each his own i guess...he was quiet mad himself and defiantly battling his own inner Jabberwocky. So, I believe you've done a wonderful job with this drawing. It's very authentic and complimentary to the true nature of "Wonderland".

Anyway...enough with the creep. Here's a fun little March Hare fact; In the 1999 UK made for TV film of Alice Through the Looking Glass, the March Hare's role was invisible...that's to say, Hare wasn't nonexistent, he was literally portrayed as invisible.
